Frankenstein...It's Aliiive!! Well the thread is at least
« on: August 27, 2015, 01:59:41 pm »
So what time scale shall we put on Frankenstein?

Do we want to read certain numbers of chapters and report back, or go and read the whole book then discuss?

Hopefully we can get new club members Ballookey and Nycchikidie in on this one too.

Would still be playing We Rule and Supernauts - if the devs could be bothered.

Maybe a two week period with discussions half way through (1st week) followed by a final review (2nd week)? Obviously, we'd find the halfway point in the chapters and keep the first discussion up to that point. If you've read ahead, you can hold off till the end or discuss up to the half way point only. Just an idea.

Sounds good. I think when I took a quick look earlier there were 24 chapters.

So, 12 and 12 then? Any objections? We'll give it a couple of days and go Sunday (start) to Sunday (1st 12 chapter review, optional) to Sunday (final review)? Or Mondays?

I have all sorts of objections, but none of them have to do with the schedule or the book  ;D

I object to people spitting on the street
I object to rude people
I object to people who think they are better than others...

You get the idea   ;)

Bring on the next read!  :-)
See you next Sunday!!!

Damnit! Just today, I one-upped a guy, who thought he was better than me, at chess. We where playing in a park and afterwards, I told him to stuff his King and I spit on the floor. I never imagined I'd get into Groc's bad books (see what I did there ;) ) this way :P.

LOL Ninja and Gatecon!!

now, my burning question of the day - yes, I know, I shouldn't be playing with fire ;-)  is this (I ask because I do tend to not have brain cells on certain days at certain times) *grin*

I want to confirm that I downloaded the correct book - does it start out with letters (2 so far) from a Brother to his Sister about some 'adventure' he is on?

If it doesn't would someone mind posting a link for the book for a Kindle paper for me, that way I am not reading 12 chapters of some different book  :o :P

Poor Groc. I understand those days of brain cell disfunction.

Sounds like you are reading the right book. Starts with 4 letters, opening lines:

"St. Petersburgh, Dec. 11th, 17—TO Mrs. Saville, England You will rejoice to hear that no disaster has accompanied the commencement of an enterprise which you have regarded with such evil forebodings."

*In Mr Burns type voice* excellent...
I just can't wrap my head around my Kindle at times, I don't know how to move between chapters/pages etc, but managed to skip ahead a bit to find a Chapter 1, but was still uncertain.
Thanks for the confirmation Selkii :-)

Now post the last few lines of the book.

My favorite Twain quote is "The coldest winter of my life was summer in San Francisco."  Or perhaps I've already lost my mind and haven't missed it.  :o

I'm a little out of commission right now.  Need to take care of the household (someone else's recovery after surgery is not going well so my entire weekend is more shot than I thought) so I will mostly likely miss the 1st check-in and will try to chime in at the end.

I have read through letter 3, then became seriously sidetracked with Wikipedia: Mary Shelley to Percy Shelley to Prometheus and back to Mary. I tend to get diverted a lot ( like an additional side trip to read about The Year with No Summer, that is, the year Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein).

I think the prose is so dense, I'd like to suggest we can comment or ask questions at any time with the actual reference hidden in a spoiler. That way, one could head it as "question on chapter (whatever)" with the question hidden to be seen by those who have gotten that far (or want to cheat).

There goes my suggestion for the next book - Harry Potter and the Egotistical Spitting Insultor

Gack!!

I pull out that quote every time we have someone coming to visit and wants to know "what should I bring?" Shorts and a parka.
