Bobbaing
« on: November 06, 2011, 08:09:22 am »
As some of you have discovered, words included in this site's inappropriate word checker are replaced with "bobba". I just discovered this while trying to use the word casin-o and gam-bling in another thread (minus the hyphens). Then I read Plehk's response to the poll question about whether you spend more time playing We Rule or browsing the Mojo-Farms forum: "Actually, I spend more time bobbaing," Plehk said. It made me laugh.

So, I wondered what words, beside the obvious ones, the spell-catcher replaces with "bobba"? Some interesting results:

bullbobba, Bobba Baggins (Blibo's long lost brother), Boba B Fett (the misplaced b syndrome), ngbobba.com

Is this word-changing / censoring being done by default on the forum?

Is there a list of words it blocks, and if so, can it be modified?

I belong to a UK-based forum that many, many years ago used to have a rude words filter. It used to stop you posting rather than change the word, and didn't even tell you what word(s) were at fault.
I got tripped up by "Ho". Ho is used as an abbreviation for house; there's also the seaside town of Westward Ho; and Father Christmas (Santa) says "Ho, Ho, Ho...".

Lets see if it's a bobba word or not...

Edit: no it's not.

Lol. This exploration could very well end looking like one of those running BOBBA jokes in Warcraft trade chat. For example, when trying to find a building to place a friendly order for a goal, will we be thwarted in asking where players have their Bobbaerfly Gardens?

The same list apparently wouldnt let people register some forum names...  I guess we should be happy that it didnt just change their names for them....

Hey, I got more than once a few users to get abusive when I told them to fsck their system - on a Mac forum, so when that fsck was simply for unix filesystem checkup. :)

I think the funniest ever automatic anti-badword thing I've seen in the internet was in a Spanish Mac forum. Where the spellchecker would **** in the middle of the word if needed. Well, you couldn't use computadora there because the software **ed out the puta in that word. (I think the PCs would be the putas, Macs usually aren't).

...Though I think you guys should remove gambl1ng, since thats what a lot of people call the cart.

I agree. That is exactly the context in which it was used.

Just to clear something up:

Google do not allow gmbling related content on websites that use their ads. As you may have noticed, Mojo-Farm does use google ads as this helps to pay for the hosting. If a large number of gmbling keywords are detected there is chance my account could be banned which is obviously quite a big issue, especially since it would affect all my websites.

I understand you might find it annoying but unfortunately enabling them is not a risk I am willing to take.

Funny I just asked on another thread what the heck the bobba thing was then immediately came across this.  Thanks for the explanation...I don't see why it would be a problem...folks just need to remember it's a bobbaing cart! Word spreads pretty quickly here;D

I rather like the idea of calling the cart "The Bobba Cart" or "The Bobbaing Cart". We could even call ngmoco "ngbobba" ;)
