The Official : Animal Photo Thread!

We all have some gorgeous pets with us at home, maybe we could use this thread to post photos of them.

I'll start with my cat Trevor  (yes, we let the kids name him   )  in a favourite hidey hole

And his late sister Millie:

So, I've showed you mine - now show me yours!!

Quote from: jjfatcat
I posted this in the DOTR, but now that there's an official Pet area I'm reposting here.

This is Tony, my little 22lb bundle of fur:

This is from when my brother was taking care of Tony when I was on vacation and he taught him how to "eat at the table".

Quote from: suej0
Tony is a cheeky boy, he can stretch well to reach the table. No food must be safe on there now.

Trevor is a cutey. What is it with cats and boxes, even if the box is too small mine always tries to squeeze in. Millie looked like a little poppet too. I had a brother and sister cat too years ago, they always got on so well. George is my fourth (and currently my only) cat.

Hoping I can now put in a photo of George, following the guide from fcm (fingers crossed)

Edit, trying to get my photo smaller. It's my first time doing a link and my first photo looked huge. Oh dear, this second attempt looks big too. I tried cropping on photobucket. Sorry

How cool to be featured on the Vespa blog! I love it.  :D

Sticking to the animals theme, I thought I'd post some images of my best friend Mace Windu. Yes, I am aware that I'm a bit dorky to have a dog named after a Star Wars character, but I truly believe that he has Jedi powers ("You will place the treats in my bowl" works all the time).

Mace is a Lab/Chow mix, which essentially means that he is friendly and loyal like a lab, but stubborn and calculating like a chow. He's a great friend, and we love him dearly.  :)

These were all shot down at Fiesta Island, which is a huge leash-free zone where Macers can run, play and swim. Enjoy!

(side note: if my posts of pics are getting too long, just let me know and I'll adjust for next time)  :)

It's so obvious that you all adore your furry children! I totally agree with that ;-) Here are my kids:

This is Wolfie - he's almost 2 years old & is a marbled Bengal

This is my 5 year old Catsby (formal name "The Gray Catsby")

And my 23lb, 9 year old - Cosmo

Here are the kids!!

First two pix are of Cally. She's the quiet and intelligent one who stirs up trouble for her brother while acting all innocent.

The last two shots are of her brother Jake, who may only have three legs but I've never seen a cat move so fast. He head butts doors open, kicks the **** out of his sister, yet is the biggest softie imaginable.

I see that Elie is playing with Koi Pond. I never tried that...but it's a great idea! Wolfie's favorite is "Game for Cats" but here he is playing "App for Cats". I highly recommend both ;-)  I agree that they need their own. Maybe I'll give him the old iPad when I can afford the new one.

Here's my furry family.  This is Burgen after a really windy day:

He really was an exceptional guy.  (Giant Schnauzer). I introduced him on Wineux' sad thread not too long ago after having to say goodbye.  He was very helpful around the house.  Here he is doing the dishes:

I grew up in a dog house. Pickinese, Pug's, Boxers... lots of boxers. Thanks to the boxers, I cant stand dog tongue's touching me heh thus I wandered into the smaller fury catagory of Cats and...

I've owned three of these cuties since I was 18 back... almost 18 years ago. First was Tobie when I was in the air force stationed in north dakota. We ate popcorn and gummy worms together and our favorite game was 'roll the ferret in a blanket so it takes him 30 minutes to escape so i can play on my computer for abit' heh. Middle of a blizzard I had him in my laundry basket walking to the laundromat, he jumped out into the snow, sank 4 feet, jumped out, sank 4 feet, was having a blast of it and it was quite funny until he took a cold in and passed on four days later.

Ferrets are amazing pets. Curious as children, playful as a kitten and smart as who knows what. They love to shower, Tobie showered with me every day, would try to catch the water. He would chew on anything and everything, seriously. His nose was as cold as the artic pole and he knew how to use it to get attention. He had a funny cluck when he was happy. Dormmates would periodically return him to me after he would find a way out of my room. Tobie absolutely despised socks because they kept him from my toes. He would chew on the socks until I took them off and then after he was satisfied that they would hide my toes no more he would lick my toes. Wierd lil guy.

Miss him alot.

Hey Udovede, I've been meaning to tell you since you posted Wolfie's pic in the DLPA that I've never seen such a BEAUTIFUL cat like him before! His markings are so striking. I betcha he's quite a conversation piece, huh?

Bauble, thank you SO much! He's the most amazing cat I've ever had. This is the very first photo I saw of him. Long story short, I wasn't looking for a third cat but the second I saw this pic online, I knew I had to have him. But he was in CA and I'm in NJ. A few weeks before, I had read about Pet Airways. All they do is fly animals. At the time, they only flew to 5 cities. He was close to one and I'm close to another. It was fate! But in the process of getting him ready to fly, he escaped and was missing for 9 days. A good samaritan saw him in his backyard, called the # on the lost cat flyer & they managed to trap him.  ;-) I put the story on his own website at http://wolverinesadventures.weebly.com

These human fools.

For months now I have been befriending them, slowly putting my masterplan into place, making them believe I am a human called Gatecon.

They have been totally unaware of my true identity, (even my screen alias contains the words One Cat), yet there is one who foiled my plan. My plan for complete domination of the thread they call the DLPA. That should be an album full of images of my brethren, the felines who will soon rule the world, and not wishy washy arty images of kingdom designs.

But now we have a new plan, taking root here in this place they call Off Topics. And yes I say "We". My brothers and sisters have already started pledging their allegiance by showing themselves on this thread.

Be warned humans we have infiltrated your households and are poised ready to strike. We will rise up, steal your ipads and iphones, hold them to ransom while your crops fail and united we shall meow our demand to you.

"Clean our litter trays more often"

Don't you know how degrading it is for us superior beings to have to scrape around in that stuff.

But then our final and biggest demand will be.....
ooh I smell tuna in my dish. Laters.

Ferrets are amazing! At one time we had three.now we are down to one. We adopted a five year old (Psymon) who lived to close to ten. He was a character! He loved to steal cat toys, shoes and toothbrushes. He played hard and was happiest being a grumpy old man! Him and our one cat would play secretly upstairs when we weren't looking. He was also a sugarholic, which probably killed him in the end. Pet food makers used to make the worst treats for ferrets; loaded with sugar and dairy, horrible for a ferrets digestion.

We got our second, Zoe after a couple years, because he was slowing down, and thought he needed a friend. He did not know what she was at first, and hid from her for a day or so. Then he would beat the crap out of her. She was the sweetest creature I ever met. Psymon decided he loved her after pushing her off our 2nd floor balcony. No harm, but I didn't know where she went, so he bit my foot to get my attention! After she came in she ran to Psymon who ignored her, but they were best buds for years after. She loved people, and would climb in bed and nibble our legs and feet... She was cleaning us. Bad ferret breeding caused her to develop heart disease, blood sugar issues and cancer. I still hate Marshal's for how they breed. We tirelessly cared for her for over a year, feeding her and giving her meds every few hours. The doctor would do a checkup, and not know how she was still alive with blood sugar below 20. She just wanted to live and love, and was crazy stubborn. After a series of horrible seizures one Sunday morning we let her go.

Psymon and Zoe together

This is Zoe
Dogs and cats are great and we love them... Something about ferrets gets in your heart. We still miss them both years later.
(sorry for the huge pictures)

In one of the bedrooms we have this awful woollen wallpaper (it was ultra modern about thirty years ago!!!). Cally has just realised it provides a great grip for claws and is now using it to perfect her rock-climbing techniques.

[Apologies for the formatting ... Can someone tell me how to shrink the images some? Thanks!]

I found some old pictures on the PC, plus a new one.

New pic - The motto in our house is "Let sleeping babies lie ..." My cat is named Marguerite, or Gatita Margarita, but is called Baby, or sweepea, or bunny, etc. (Marguerite is from the opera "Faust" - see below.)

Old pics - My sister's cats are named after opera characters: Figaro and Despina. My ex's cat could say his name in his native language: Maow, which is the Thai word for "cat" (Thailand being formerly known as Siam). When I got my first cat I decided to do both: Cherubino from "Figaro" and, since most people wouldn't be able to say that, Squeak, because that's what he sounded like compared to Maow. Squeak is the Tonkinese on the left, while Maow is the Siamese on the right.

Maow 9 September 1992 - 27 December 2010
Cherubino aka Squeak 5 October 2001 - 20 May 2005

We called this one "kitty playmate"

Marvin by ballookey, on Flickr

Here's another picture of Marvin.

When we first got him, he quickly got used to me getting up at 5:30 in the morning and feeding them. But on the weekends I'm a little lazy and don't leap out of bed. I get up at 5:45, or heavens, sleep in until 6:00. So Marvin, impatient little bastard, started coming into the bedroom and clawing on the stuffed chair in there to get my attention.

Here's where being married to a behavioral specialist came in handy. My husband used to be a special education teacher, specializing in severe emotional and developmental disabilities. (before getting hit in the head by a drunk driver - but that's a story for another day) I heard so many hair-raising stories of some of the behaviors his students engaged in, and almost every single time, my husband was able to end, or re-direct these behaviors with one simple technique. If the behaviors were attention-seeking, he would simply ignore them. All his staff were trained and taught to intervene only if someone could come to harm, but otherwise any behavior that was seen to be a play for attention was to be utterly ignored. Initially, the behavior will escalate and it's at that moment you CAN'T give in. You have to resist all temptation to engage. Even if the interaction is negative, the behavior will have been successful in getting attention, and so therefore you're setting yourself up for future incidents.

Having heard many times of how this technique worked for my husband, I immediately decided to give it a try on Marvin. As much as it killed me, if he came in and started clawing on that chair, I wouldn't budge an inch. If my arm was falling asleep, I wouldn't move. Only after he stopped clawing, and walked away from the chair, then I would get up and go feed the cats.

Morning after morning, this played out. Marvin would claw more vigorously and for longer stretches, but I wouldn't move. I wouldn't yell, I wouldn't acknowledge him in any way.

After about two weeks, he gave up on the chair. He comes in, meows a little, hops up on the bed and cuddles by my legs, but he doesn't claw. We of course have scratching posts at strategic locations around the house for the cats' amusement, but they don't claw on furniture.

I mention this all because time and time again, you'll see people say "don't feed the trolls" on online forums. This is exactly WHY. Trolls are looking for attention. If they get it, they win. It isn't easy to hear your favorite chair getting shredded, but if you jump in, you reward the behavior. If you can end the behavior, then you can go back to enjoying the furniture.

Trolls aren't always rogues from outside that pop in anonymously. Sometimes we're the trolls. We all have bad days that go wrong and we lose our good sense and we become trollish. How many times as a teenager did I get mad at something my parents said and go to my room and rip all my art and posters off the wall? I thought, "I'll show them! I'm going to tear up all my personality and become a blank zombie! Then they'll regret telling me what to do!"

My parents wisely ignored that behavior and of course within a day or two I was putting poor Depeche Mode back up on the wall... ;)

Sometimes someone shreds our favorite chair online and we think we have to jump in to defend it.

But look, Marvin still gets fed, he's still an utter sweetheart. I didn't throw him out of the house and he gets all the praise and cat toys a cat could want. And my NEW bedroom chair doesn't have a mark on it.

Caturday by ballookey, on Flickr

'Caturday' is apt, because my Saturday afternoons are, indeed, rich with cat visitations. I actually do things other than play WeRule. After all, it only takes about 30 seconds to harvest and re-plant mushrooms. On Saturday afternoons I'm drawing and painting. Sometimes (frequently) Marvin sees the end of my paintbrush and thinks it would be really nifty to come bite it and see if it's playful.
